Drafted-to-measure versus standard sizing with alterations
What standard sizing plus alterations misses
Buying a standard size and altering it later means the original seams and darts were placed for a different body, so a tailor is working around compromises rather than starting fresh. This often limits how much a gown can truly be corrected.
How drafting from scratch is different
We draft the bodice and skirt panels directly from your measurements before cutting fabric, so the seams start in the right place rather than being moved later. The included fitting adjustment then fine-tunes a pattern that was already built around you.
About this order
Most gowns start from a standard size block and hope your body fits close enough. Atelier starts the other way around: you send us your measurements, and our pattern maker drafts the bodice and skirt panels from scratch around those numbers before any silk is cut. It takes longer than pulling a pattern off the shelf, but it means the waist seam sits exactly where your waist sits, not two inches off in either direction. We build the structured interior lining as its own fitted layer, shaped to your torso before the outer mulberry silk satin or Chantilly lace panels are added over it. Once the gown is assembled, we include one fitting adjustment in the order, where we take in or let out the seams based on how the finished piece sits on you. It is a slower process than buying off a rack, but the payoff is a gown that was never meant to fit anyone else first.

What measurements do I need to provide? +
We ask for bust, waist, hip, shoulder width, and full length measurements, along with a few photos for posture reference; our order form walks you through each one.
What happens if the fit needs adjusting once it arrives? +
One fitting adjustment is included, where our workroom takes in or lets out seams based on notes and measurements you send us after trying it on.
Can I choose lace or tulle additions? +
Yes, Chantilly lace panels and a tulle underskirt are available as options you select at checkout before we cut your pattern.
How is this different from buying a standard size and altering it later? +
A standard-size gown is cut from someone else's proportions and then adjusted, while this gown is drafted from your measurements first, so the seam placement starts in the right spot.
